Becoming A Model - How To Make Your Dream Job Work

Working as a model - a dream job. Nevertheless, there are many things you should consider when starting out and planning your career. The be-all and end-all for a successful start is joining a suitable modelling agency . This usually happens through open castings or e-castings . This is followed by the first assignments and then modelling (almost) works itself out. But what requirements are important and how much do you earn?

Modelling - what requirements should you have?

In the past, working as a model was only possible with the ‘dream measurements’ of 88-62-91 (+/- 2 cm) and a height of 176 cm (+/- 2 cm). Those days are over. Candidates with the above-mentioned model measurements still have excellent prospects of being booked for fashion brands, editorial shoots and catalogue shots. But today there is also a broad market for models with different features. Examples include best-ager models, tattoo models, plus-size models, models with disabilities and people of colour . In any case, you should have good work ethics (diligence, communication skills, ambition, punctuality) and an interest in the fashion world. You may even have completed catwalk training . Agencies and clients often attach great importance to authenticity. As a model, you should therefore always present yourself as naturally as possible and not pretend. A well-maintained Instagram account with many followers and the ability to network effectively are also essential if you want to be successful in the long term. It also makes sense to specialise in a specific industry:

- Fashion model
- Commercial model
- Trade fair model

Working as a model - where and when?

As a model, you should generally be prepared to cover all cities in Germany. At the beginning, you will probably receive more regional assignments. Later on, your radius will expand. Modelling in Berlin on Mondays, in Stuttgart on Wednesdays and at a fashion show in Hamburg at the weekend - this could be your daily routine as a model. Typical fields of work are fashion shoots, advertising shoots, catwalk jobs, trade fairs and events. You will also be able to work as a model in modern formats such as videos or online campaigns.

How much does a model earn?

A model's salary depends primarily on their status in the business. Some modelling jobs are extremely well paid (several hundred or even thousands of euros for a few hours' work). Other jobs, however, are more or less unpaid and serve primarily as a reference, just as TFP shoots are useful for your sedcard . On average, a full-time model for modelling in Frankfurt, Hamburg and other cities earns around €40,000 per year - according to representative surveys.

Why it pays to apply as a model

The way into the directories of renowned agencies - and thus to lucrative jobs as a model - always leads via the intermediate step of applying. Applying involves filling out an application form and uploading model photos. After that, you are ready to go modelling in Munich, Düsseldorf or elsewhere. However, don't be disappointed if it doesn't work out straight away or if you are constantly shortlisted but not booked. The job as a model definitely requires a lot of patience, but enough ambition, hard work and independence are half the battle!
