A shortlist is a narrowed down selection of models by the client for a fashion show , video or film shoot. The term "shortlist" can also stand for the term "pre-selection".

How is the pre-selection for a photo shoot or fashion show made?

At the beginning of a project, the client and the modelling agency clarify which type of performer would be suitable for the photo shoot and which models are therefore on the client's shortlist. The requirements that the actor or actress must fulfil in order to be suitable for a particular shoot are discussed. Whether cover model or fitness model , people model or best-ager, the model agency's database contains a huge number of talents of all kinds. The agency provides its clients with comprehensive, individualised and tailor-made suggestions from its database. The perfect model can then be chosen from this initial selection.

Clients get an initial impression of the models via sedcards and presentation folders stored in the agency's database. In some cases, the process also involves a personal introduction and a casting . The client then decides which type of performer is suitable for the planned project. Sometimes a longlist is drawn up first, from which a few models or actors are selected for the shortlist.

The client can make a pre-selection from the sedcards and presentation folders that the agency has available. To be accepted by a modelling agency, applicants create photographic material and present their charisma and skills in so-called sedcards. These portfolios and sedcards are very important because they allow clients to quickly gain a first impression. A convincing presentation portfolio increases the chances of a model or actor being shortlisted. It is therefore worth investing time, energy and ideas in the test shoot and in the production of image material.

Pre-selection by casting

A casting is often used to make a selection from the potential talent . Suitable models or actors are invited, and their charisma and suitability are tested, for example by means of a test shoot. Those who are shortlisted have a good chance of being hired.

The shortlist is not yet a binding commitment

The shortlist is not a final commitment. But it is important feedback. It shows that the model has been shortlisted compared to many other applicants and has qualified for the job in principle.
