The Endless Possibilities Of Modelling

Models are people who display and model the latest fashion for brands on the catwalk and at photo shoots among many other events. Aspiring models are not just attractive people, but should also be people with personality and charisma.

Is it a dream job or is it hard work?

Walking the catwalk seems to be a dream for many people, especially for younger generations. They see modelling as a fun and well-paid job; but the reality is somewhat different. Long photo shoots require discipline and stamina and the job is demanding and often exhausting. Models often have to stay in uncomfortable poses for long periods of time until the photo shoot is perfect. It’s not just tiring photoshoots either; modelling on a catwalk is strenuous and requires focus. That being said, anyone who enjoys presenting themselves and performing in front of an audience can have a lot of fun as a model. Brands expect more from their models than just looking good on the catwalk. They are looking for skills like reliability, teamwork, photogenicity, physical fitness, resilience, openness and willingness to travel. Anyone with a distinctive and natural look fills the most important requirements for working as a model.

Becoming a model: Do I have to be Size 0?

There are various requirements for models, depending on the type of modelling you do. For example, you still have to be a certain size to be a catwalk model , however, in many cases, charisma and personality are more important than how much you weigh. Agencies and clients are increasingly looking for people who don’t fit into the mould of classic high fashion models . Authenticity, self-confidence and a positive outlook on life are relatable and attractive to consumers, which allows them to identify with the models.

How much do models earn?

Earnings vary from job to job depending on the respective client and the specific assignment. High-fashion models who work for well-known fashion brands can sometimes earn huge sums of money, but for most other modelling jobs, you can’t always rely on earning lots. Some models are in high demand one week, but the next week they have no work at all. Certain jobs, like photo shoots for catalogues, tend to offer more stability. The more professional, reliable and uncomplicated you seem, the higher your chances of recurring work. On average, a new model in Germany earns anything from 50 euros per hour. A professional, on the other hand, earns around 50,000 euros per year.

What are the different kinds of models?

Fashion / Editorial Model

High fashion models are constantly featured in world-famous fashion magazines such as Elle, Bazaar and Vogue. They model and shoot for major fashion labels like Prada, Giorgio Armani, Valentino, Gucci etc. Standard measurements are a precondition for a modelling contract . Female models for editorials are usually 175 to 183 cm tall and very slim, with standard measurements of 84 cm breasts, 58 cm for the waist and 84 cm for the hips.

Runway Model

Female runway models need to be at least 175 cm tall as a requirement and males should be between 185-195 cm tall. The designers for these fashion shows have exclusive clothing made exactly for these sizes; specific measurements are essential to ensure that the designs are properly displayed to potential clients.

Commercial Model

Commercial models model for all the other areas that aren’t high-end fashion- for example in adverts, stock photography or catalogue photos. They can be of any age, size or gender.

Fitness Model

Fitness models must be sporty and athletic- many of them are also trained athletes and sportsmen. They usually also work as editorial or commercial models .

Plus Size Model

The demand for plus-size models at fashion labels is huge. In recent years, they have become a huge part of the fashion and modelling industry, both for photoshoots and on the catwalk.

Petite Model

Petite models are usually shorter than 170 cm. They mostly shoot for lingerie and swimwear catalogues. Their smaller body parts mean they are also popular as hand and foot models.

Child/Baby Model

This age group ranges from birth to 12 years of age. There are no fixed specifications for height and measurements for children's casting .

Swimwear/Lingerie Model

Swimwear models also present lingerie, underwear, nightwear and summer clothing for brands at photo shoots and on the catwalk. They can also work as showroom models. These kinds of models usually look sportier and curvier than editorial models.

Glamour Model

Glamour models are usually hired for seductive and erotic photo shoots to appear in magazines such as Playboy or Penthouse. They are normally curvy models.

Body Part Model

Instead of portraits or full body shoots, this type of model presents their body parts like hands, feet, teeth, legs and hair. A foot model, for example, can receive a modelling contract from shoe manufacturers or for foot baths. A hand model can present jewellery or nail polish at photo shoots.

Promotion Model

Promotion models work as hostesses or grid girls. One of the most common jobs for promotion models is to promote or present products at trade fairs.

Senior Model

Senior models (also called best-ager models) are usually over 40 years old and are usually new to the modelling industry after a career change. Recently, the demand for senior models from fashion brands and advertising companies has dramatically increased.
