Hand And Foot Models

Hand or foot models are also called partial models. They are particularly popular for advertising or commercial shoots where only the hand or foot can be seen in the shot - for example when advertising a shampoo or holding an object. Sometimes partial models lend their hands or feet to actors for certain scenes . Because their face and body don’t play any role in their modelling career, they are never recognised in public.

How do you become a hand/foot model?

Hand and foot models help shoot adverts for things like hand cream, nail polish and jewellery, therefore the demand for these types of models is relatively high. If you have particularly nice hands, models who were once fashion models are now full time hand/foot models instead. Others aim to specialise in this type of modelling from the get-go.

Can anybody be a hand/foot model?

To be a hand model, you need straight, long fingers and an even skin tone. Your hands should appear elegant, and things like strong knuckles, lines or scars are a bit of a hindrance in this career. For partial models, however, it depends on the category of the assignment. Hands with shorter nails can be considered for modelling household objects. Hands with longer, narrow nails are preferred for jewellery presentations. Small hands are well suited to representing children's hands in films to save children having to sit for hours on a film set . It’s not just women either! Men are also in demand for hand/foot modelling- for them, the requirements depend entirely on the type of shoot.

The importance of steady hands

To be a hand model you have to have steady hands. It can sometimes take several hours to shoot a 30-second advert and the model has to be able to hold a product for an extended period of time, without pausing, shaking or leaning on it. This ensures clear, unblurry images. It is also worthwhile for a hand model to study and practise the most common hand positions. It's about holding different objects in different ways. You have to learn how to express emotions with your hands; showing joy, seduction or strength with your fingers requires a lot of practice.

What do you earn as a hand or foot model?

Many part-time models work on a freelance basis, which means that their income ebbs and flows. Those who are in high demand as hand or foot models can earn a four-figure sum per working day. However, this amount is the exception rather than the rule. Depending on the client, it could be between €200 and €600 for 4-8 hours on set but that obviously depends on availability and talent .

Uploading hand and foot photos

Partial models need photos similar to an actor's for their applications ( portrait /full body). You can get professional photos taken of your hands in different poses to upload too. This goes for your feet as well.
