Commercial models are charismatic, attractive and empathetic people. The important thing is not to be a certain height or weight, but to have an interesting personality and natural appearance.

What do commercial models do?

Commercial models model for photo shoots and appear in adverts for posters, magazines and TV. They model all kinds of fashion and lifestyle products.

What makes a good model?

Being able to advertise and sell products is the key role of a commercial model. The aim of promotion photos is to clearly advertise the product and gain traction in the market. It isn’t just about the aesthetics of the products, but how the advert makes the customer feel- this is the job of a commercial model, using facial expressions or gestures. Often, commercial models will have to model with other people in photo shoots e.g. in a family shoot or with animals. This can be a challenge, as you have to quickly bond with your co-workers (even furry ones!) to convey a realistic relationship. Therefore commercial models must be uncomplicated and easy to work with.

How are commercial models different?

A commercial model scores points with the fact that consumers identify more easily with authentic naturalness than with the aloof extravagance that is typical of fashion models. Commercial models are more relatable and authentic than fashion models. Runway models must be thin, tall and beautiful, and editorial models pose for famous photographers and appear in high-end fashion magazines, while for commercial models, height, weight and age don’t hugely affect their chances. Instead, commercial models are charismatic, interesting, natural and good at portraying emotions. Having these traits broadens the range of opportunities and offers them more of a variety of jobs than fashion/editorial models.

Can anyone become a commercial model?

Some models are natural talents, others learn with experience; because there is such a high demand for different types of models, almost anyone can be booked for a commercial shoot, as long as you are likeable and confident. Remember: good looks aren’t everything!

Booking jobs and earning money

Because commercial models are so versatile, they can appear in various advertising campaigns and are not restricted to a certain type of modelling like fashion or runway models. This obviously means it is easier to find work. The more recognition you gain (from a successful ad campaign, for example), the higher your market value. Generally, commercial models can make a living from photoshoots and ad campaigns, just like high fashion models !
