Fashionista: Fashion And Trends As A Lifestyle

The term fashionista comes up almost by default in most conversations and articles about fashion, trends and styling. How is the word defined, which famous fashionistas are there and what is the difference between a fashionista and a fashion victim?

What does "fashionista" mean?

By definition, any person who is passionate about fashion, shopping and styling is a fashionista. The affinity for trends and fashion can go so far that it becomes the person's most important purpose in life. Trend awareness and fashion consciousness are therefore a fashionista's top priority.

Who invented the term?

The term was invented by the American Stephen Fried, who used it in his 1993 book "Thing of Beauty - The Tragedy of Supermodel Gia" to describe all the people involved in a photo shoot. The word itself is a neologism - a neologism made up of the English term "fashion" and the Italian or Spanish-sounding suffix "-ista".

Angelina Jolie made the term famous worldwide

The term fashionista was made famous by actress Angelina Jolie, who took on the leading role in a film about the life of supermodel Gia (see above) in 1998. From then on, interest in the fashion business, trends and fashion & beauty in general grew rapidly. Today, the term is no longer limited to people involved in photo shoots. Fashion bloggers, well-styled stars and fashion-conscious private individuals are also labelled in this way.

There are both male and female fashionistas

What many people don't realise is that fashionistas cannot be narrowed down to one gender. Despite the feminine-sounding ending -ista, it is quite common to also refer to fashion-conscious men (or trans people) as fashionistas.

The difference between a fashion victim and a fashionista

Not every person whose passion is shopping for clothes is necessarily a fashionista. Someone who simply follows every trend and demonstrates little taste and style is known as a fashion victim. The decisive difference to fashionistas: fashion victims don't have their own style, but buy almost everything that is currently considered trendy and hip.

Shopping and styling like a pro: how to become a fashionista

A good sense of style and current trends is one of the basic virtues of all fashionistas. Other must-do's are:

- Don't be afraid of simple basics like classic blazers
- skilful layering (e.g. midi dress + trousers)
- Mix prints stylishly
- Master the tricks: Tucking garments or knotting around the waist etc.
