Makeover Show - Amazing Transformation On Camera
No makeover moment is as well-known as the infamous makeover episode of "Germany's Next Topmodel". There is also no shortage of other TV programmes that show great the effect of concealer, comb & co. can be. But how do producers manage to make the change so drastic? They of course have a couple of tricks up their sleeve…and as with all good makeover shows, we’re ready for the grand reveal.
Suitable models for the makeover
In principle, any duckling can become a swan, but nothing is left to chance for a convincing makeover show. As randomly as the protagonists seem to be chosen, they rarely are. Hairdressers, make-up artists and costume designers usually form a very precise picture of the TV candidates before they are chosen. Only if the potential for a glamorous glow-up is great enough will the model be considered for a makeover show. In addition, the person shown must arouse certain sympathies in the audience. Viewers should be able to identify with the candidate - and in the best case even discover parallels to themselves. This automatically arouses interest in the announced makeover and makes the result of the makeover or dress-up campaign appear even more convincing.
Sophisticated staging for the makeover
The before shots usually show the model without make-up and with an ill-fitting hairstyle. She or he is usually unfavourably lit and directed to stand around a little awkwardly. The clothing also often rather lacklustre. It is colourless to monotonous, is staged without pizzazz and lacks any sense of fashion. After the dress-up, the model looks much fresher. Her hair is done to perfectly frame her face and her make-up is refined, she wears brightly coloured clothes and presents herself confidently in a completely new look. The restyled person strikes powerful poses and shows how happy they are about their makeover by laughing cheerfully.
The dramaturgical effect of a makeover
The effect of a makeover is not only due to make-up artists , hairdressers and fashion consultants - but also to the lighting, the camera angle and the set-up. The model herself also plays an important role: the more convincingly she presents the results of the makeover and dress-up, the greater the show effect. To achieve this, the actors need a certain amount of acting talent : they have to appear just as credible as dissatisfied unstyled models as they do as enthusiastic restyled models. This is why many makeover shots are filmed several times - if necessary, until the model's reaction is "broadcast-ready".
