If you want to apply to a modelling agency , you don’t have to attend an in person casting - you can simply submit a few photos to the agency that you would like to be represented by.  Does that make you want to apply to a modelling agency? Keep reading to find out what polaroids are all about and how you can easily make one!

Polaroids are basic photos that are the first impression an agency gets from an aspiring model . These photos must therefore be suitable and adhere to certain guidelines. The name Polaroid dates back to the days of Polaroid cameras. These instant cameras were efficient as you never had to wait for the photos to be developed. Today, you no longer have to rely on physical copies of Polaroid photos. Most smartphones are equipped with camera systems with the quality of a Polaroid camera. You don’t even have to go to a professional photographer to take them- you can do it all yourself from the comfort of your own home.

The essential Polaroid shots are:
- Frontal shot from the waist up
- 2x side profile (with ponytail or hair tied up, both sides)
- Frontal close-up of the face (headshot)
- Frontal view from knee height
- Full body frontal view and portrait at ¾ angle

Of these, the first five photos are always required while the others vary from agency to agency.

If you decide to take your own Polaroids, you can then submit them directly to the respective casting agency . It is important that you find out about the agency's guidelines beforehand. Some agencies prefer to meet in person so they can take Polaroids of you themselves. You may also be asked for a back view to show your hair length.  Of course, you can also go to a local photographer who will take the photos you want. You should expect to pay around £50-100 for this.

Make sure that you wear neutral, figure-hugging clothing for the Polaroids as this allows the agency to see your body shape. The photos are usually taken against a white background so avoid wearing white clothing, as it blurs with the background. Deep black clothing is also not recommended as it contrasts too harshly with the white background. If you decide to wear make-up , stick to a natural daytime look.
