Clothing Size- How To Figure Yours Out

Every person's clothing size is individual. It is based on the measurements of the body. To figure out your clothing size, you should measure the circumference of your chest, waist and shoulders. Clothing sizes are different for men, women and children because clothing adapts to your own anatomy, which is different for men and women. A child’s physique depends on height growth and development, therefore a child’s clothing size is constantly changing.

What do you need clothing sizes for?

When buying clothes, it is important that you know your size. From brand to brand and style to style, there are slight differences between each piece, but generally clothing size is universal. It is easy to try a smaller or larger size if the one you have picked out doesn’t fit you, but it is important to have an idea of your size before you buy, especially if you’re ordering online.

How to determine your size

You can find out your size by measuring your waist, stomach, hips and chest with a flexible measuring tape or string. You can also measure your shoulders (but this is less important). Make a note of all the values in centimetres and then use a table online to figure out your size. Remember that sizes for men and women are different.

Difference in clothing sizes for men and women

Body measurements and physique are different for men and women. For this reason, there are different clothing sizes. In the UK, women’s sizes are measured in numbers from a size 4-32. For men, they use letters to signify the sizing (S, M, L, XL). These stand for small, medium, large and extra large.

Why are these sizes different?

- for men, the measured chest circumference is halved
- for women, six centimetres are subtracted from the halved chest circumference
Their different body shapes also play a major role in the development of clothing.

International clothing sizes

When buying clothing, it is important that you also know the international clothing sizes. This applies in particular to the American pattern. Many manufacturers follow this clothing size. Clothing is labelled XS to XL. This clothing size is based on the designations S for small, M for medium and L for large. An X in front of the letters S and L means that the clothing size is smaller or larger than the standard value. You can convert the American clothing sizes to the English values. For men, the letters stay the same, however American sizes are generally larger so we recommend sizing down. For women, an American M is a UK size 8-10.
